Planning for a Stress Free Return from Your Vacation

August 29th, 2007 · 1 Comment

As the summer wraps up, you may want to take one last vacation from work. While the actual vacation is a stress-reliever, the plan to leave and return is sure to cause some chaos in your life. You have to line up your work so that someone else can do it, or work ahead yourself on your projects, set all of your messaging systems to let your contacts know that you’re gone and when you will return, and that’s not even thinking of your personal preparations!I’m sure you can think of a time that you’ve returned from a few days off only to find chaos in the office, and papers piled on your desk. If you plan appropriately, you can truly enjoy your vacation because you’ve got a return-to-work strategy. In order to reduce the stress during your return, take a few steps to create a smooth return to the workflow. Dr. Edward Creagan of the Mayo Clinic has a few suggestions for a smooth return:

  • Return during the middle of the week. This way you will avoid the stress and chaos of the Monday morning frenzy.
  • Schedule time to play catch-up with phone calls and emails
  • Arrange a debriefing meeting with your staff so they can inform you of what you’ve missed
  • Remember that you need and deserve a real vacation. Take some steps to create a smooth return, and you can truly enjoy your time off!
