SuperMemo - Learn and Recall Information Efficiently

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Once again we turn to technology to help.  However the reason we need help relates to the abundance of technology in our lives.  We are wired, tracked, and expected to respond to  multiple demands on our time throughout the day.  The stresses created by multitasking affect us physically, and one victim of this barrage is our memory.

Things come in so fast that there is little time to imprint them into our memories before the next thing hits.  We cannot forget what we never remembered in the first place. Yet this lack of memory is very scary.

Time and again clients confess that they cannot remember simple things, and they are looking for help.  It may be where they placed something, what time they have to show up for a meeting, the name of the person they met an hour ago, or what they read in the newspaper that morning.  Even though they thought they were paying attention, the information was not absorbed and retained.

The first thing I tell everyone is to write it down.  This note can then be incorporated into a system where everything is gathered and allows you to easily prioritize your day.

However another issue in needing to remember is not just for short daily details but to process and retain knowledge.  If you are struggling in this area, a program like SuperMemo could be the answer. The company claims to provide a 50-fold increase in the speed of learning, which they achieve by determining the correct interval between the repetitions that lead to long-term retention.

The fear of Alzheimer’s is at the forefront of many concerns about the inability to recall.  Most of the time this physical deterioration is not the issue.  It is a result of the stresses on our brains caused by non-stop multitasking and inability to be present in the moment.  If you want to be sure you are stretching your own memory, see what techology can offer in the way of assistance.
