Emotional Blocks to Time Management

November 30th, 2006 · No Comments

Do you know of someone who is always being told to “get organized” so that he or she will show up on time, manage to find things, and get more done? Stress affects many people as they strive to cope with multiple daily tasks and events. However lack of time is not the only factor in struggling with time management skills.

If you know of someone who is losing time every day because of an accumulation of clutter, there may also be some emotional blocks and mental barriers that are interfering. Some of the factors that can contribute to emotional barriers in organizing are

  • living in the past: clinging to souvenirs, outdated clothes, unused furniture to the point that it may interfere with enjoyment of the present,
  • loss of a loved one: not be able to part with anything pertaining to that person,
  • depression era mental blocks: thinking you might need this someday, even though you have multiples of the item.

If disorganization extends beyond the workplace and is affecting lifestyle and relationships, delve further into what may be causing the accumulations. Lack of time is not the only reason for struggling with organization and time management skills. Helping someone recognize that there may be other emotional or mental barriers involved is a start on the path to the assistance they may need for improving both time management and stress management skills.
