Is Daylight Savings a Productivity Campaign?

November 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Twice a year we’re told to change our clocks–”Spring Forward, Fall Back”–for Daylight Savings Time.

This may seem to be as predictable a ritual as the seasons themselves. But it’s actually a rather fluid concept that was first standardized 120 years ago by railroad executives so they could have an official noon to make their schedules more reliable.

As a child I was told we needed Daylight Savings Time so farmers would have more daylight in their fields.

Whatever the rationale, it’s not a universally accepted concept. Some huge countries manage to survive without it at all. Everyone in China, for example, is on Beijing time. At 9 a.m. millions of Chinese are still in the dark, while it’s already mid-morning for millions of others.

Daylight Savings Time might be considered the world’s biggest productivity campaign, because it supposedly helps us stay more in tune with the countless processes and requirements of our daily lives. We may not be sure how it actually helps us, but dutifully change our clocks at the appointed hour–or as soon as we can get around to it.

Isn’t it amazing, then, that many of us never get around to setting ourselves up for greater success by implementing proven time management strategies? Once we get into the organization habit and learn to prioritize daily tasks, we see immediate productivity payoffs. And it takes about as long as adjusting our clocks.

Setting a key organization system is really about changing our daily habits in small but significant ways. We can (and should) spend more time doing what produces positive results, and less of it undoing many problems created when we didn’t do something right the first time.

Like everybody else, I appreciate getting an extra hour’s sleep on a fall weekend. But why settle for that, when you could gain hours of productive time every day with a key organization plan? It’s time to organize your personal Daylight Savings plan for greater success. Contact a reputable productivity professional, and get started on your new time management training program today.

There’s no time like the present!
